"How much does business water cost?" is a fair question with an annoying answer: it depends. Unlike a fixed monthly subscription, your water bill is built from several charges based on how much you use and where you are. Here is what makes up the cost, how it is worked out, and how to tell whether you are paying a fair rate.
The parts of a business water bill
Most business water bills are made up of a few separate charges:
- Clean water — the water supplied to you, usually charged per cubic metre (m3) you use.
- Wastewater (sewerage) — the used water taken away, also usually charged per cubic metre.
- Standing or fixed charges — a set charge to cover meter and account costs.
- Surface water and highway drainage — for rainwater running off your site into the sewers.
So your total is a mix of what you use (the volumetric charges) and fixed charges that apply regardless.
What drives your rate
There is no single average business water rate, because your price depends on:
- How much you use — most business supplies are metered, so heavier users pay more.
- Your region — wholesale charges are set by the regional water company and vary across the country.
- Your retailer — since the market opened in 2017, businesses in England (and Scotland since 2008) can choose who bills them, and retailers set their own margins and service.
- Your meter and site — meter size and the drainage that applies to your property both feed in.
How to work out your cost
A recent bill tells you most of it: find your charge per cubic metre for clean water and wastewater, your standing charge, and your metered usage. Multiply usage by the rates, add the fixed charges, and you have your annual water cost — which you can then compare against the market.
Be realistic about switching savings: retail margins are small, so the headline saving from changing retailer is often modest. The bigger wins usually come from fixing billing errors — like surface-water drainage you do not use — which we cover in our guide on business water bill errors.
How Win Energy helps
We compare business water retailers across the market and, just as importantly, check your existing bill line by line for the charges that quietly add up. Where the real saving is in correcting your bill rather than switching, we will tell you honestly.
