What clinical waste actually is
Clinical waste is waste from healthcare or similar activities that could pose a risk of infection or harm. The common types are:
- Sharps — needles, blades, lancets and similar.
- Infectious waste — dressings, swabs and items contaminated with blood or bodily fluids.
- Medicinal waste — out-of-date or unused medicines.
- Offensive (hygiene) waste — non-infectious but unpleasant waste such as incontinence products.
Businesses that produce clinical waste (often without realising)
It is far broader than you might think:
- Beauty salons, tattoo studios and aesthetics clinics — needles, cannulas and microneedling tips are sharps.
- Care and nursing homes — sharps, dressings and large volumes of offensive waste.

The simple test
Ask yourself three questions. Do you use or dispose of needles or blades? Do you generate items contaminated with blood or bodily fluids? Do you handle medicines that expire? If you answered yes to any, you almost certainly produce clinical waste and need a compliant collection.
