Business water meters explained: how metered charging works

Most business water supplies are metered, so your bill reflects what you actually use. Here is how the meter feeds your bill — and the simple checks that keep it accurate.

Most business water supplies are metered, which means you pay for the water you actually use rather than a flat estimate. That is usually fairer — but only if the meter is read correctly and your bill reflects it. Here is how it all works, and the checks worth doing.

How metered charging works

Your water meter measures the volume of water you use, in cubic metres (m3). Your bill then charges you for that volume in two ways:

On top of the volume charges there are usually fixed standing charges. So your total is your measured usage multiplied by the rates, plus the fixed charges.

Actual vs estimated readings

This is where bills go wrong. If your meter isn't read regularly, your retailer may estimate your usage — and estimates can be too high or too low. Check your bill for an "E" (estimated) or "A" (actual) marker. Submitting a real meter reading keeps your bill accurate and avoids nasty catch-up bills later.

Meter size and location

Meters come in different sizes, and a meter that is larger than your business needs can carry higher standing charges. It is worth knowing where your meter is, that it is accessible for reading, and that its size suits your usage. If you have moved into premises previously used by a heavier water user, this is worth checking.

How Win Energy helps

We review your business water bill against your meter and usage, flag estimated reads and possible meter-size issues, and check the charges add up. Where something looks wrong, we help put it right — and if your bill is already fair, we will tell you.

A metered supply should mean you pay for exactly what you use. Keep your reads actual, know your meter size, and glance at your usage for anything odd — and your water bill will stay honest.

FAQ

Water — Common Questions

Your meter measures usage in cubic metres. You are charged per cubic metre for clean water supplied and usually per cubic metre for wastewater taken away, plus fixed standing charges.
An actual reading (often marked A) is taken from the meter; an estimated reading (often marked E) is the retailer's guess when the meter isn't read. Estimates can be wrong either way, so submitting actual reads keeps your bill accurate.
Yes. A meter larger than your business needs can carry higher standing charges. If you moved into premises previously used by a heavier water user, it is worth checking the meter size suits you.
If your metered usage is much higher than normal for no obvious reason, it can indicate a leak. Comparing readings over time, or an overnight check with nothing running, helps spot it.
