Business waste vs household waste: what's the difference?

It's a common and reasonable question: if you run a small business, or work from home, can't you just put your waste in the normal bins? The answer is no — and the reason is legal, not just practical.

The legal difference

Any waste produced by a business activity is classed as commercial (or 'trade') waste, whether that's a shop, office, salon, or a business run from home. Household waste is domestic waste from where people live. The two are handled under different rules, and commercial waste can't go in household bins or the council's household collection.

Why you can't use household bins

As a business, you have a legal duty of care for your waste: you must store it safely, hand it to a licensed waste carrier, and keep waste transfer notes.
